There’s a reason they say ‘fell’ in love or ‘falling’ in love, I believe the expression dates back to at least the 1500s but perhaps it’s older, maybe the expression remembers God being a boy. They reckon it’s a reference to the sudden occurrence of the feeling, I suggest it’s because when you truly ‘fall’ in love it becomes damn near impossible to stand up. The knees grow weak, legs begin to shake and your body feels like it belongs to someone else but if you care to stand again, one must fall further to escape and your body becomes heavy as if sandbags are strapped to every limb. Falling out of love seems to be a much heavier fall and your body no longer recognizes itself at all. This is a poem I wrote called Falling in Love.
FALLING IN LOVE
Do you remember the story I told?
The one about the young man
Falling in love
Believing the promise he was sold
The one about the young woman
Falling in love
Believing she was too delicate to hold
The one about them making a plan
Falling in love
Believing they’d be together growing old
Forget the story I used to tell
The one about the young man
Falling in love
Believing his heart broke when he fell
The one about the young woman
Falling in love
Believing he was her ticket out of hell
The one where they’d both grow old hand in hand
Falling in love
Growing sick while trying to make each other feel well
