Once upon a time in a far off place a young man and a young woman walked hand in hand. A stranger stopped them in their tracks to tell the couple how happy they seemed. The stranger said their love gave them hope. Neither the young man or the young woman had it in their hearts to tell the stranger they’d broken up some time ago and were just spending the day together, catching up after the years had rolled by. I wrote the following poem about that day, or a day just like it. A day where you can lose yourself in a game of make-believe and just pretend.
PRETEND (A LOVE POEM FOR THE BROKEN-HEARTED)
Let’s pretend for a minute
Lose ourselves in a moment
We don’t have to be ourselves
When we could be anybody else
Leave the past where it sat
Don’t need to think about that
The future can come when it comes
Like you and I don’t belong to anyone
Let’s forget about reality
Lose ourselves in a rarity
We don’t have to be ourselves
When we could be anybody else
Wait before we take a final bow
We could spend a second living in the now
Recreate our long lost magic
Say hello to those sparks we lost in transit
Let’s be in love like we used to be
Lose ourselves inside the beast’s belly
We don’t have to be ourselves
When we could be anybody else
So take me by the hand
Let’s act like we both understand
Spend the day in each other’s arms
Get lost in our ill remembered charms
Let’s play a game of make believe
Lose ourselves somewhere in between
We don’t have to be ourselves
When we could be anybody else
We can recreate a long forgotten kiss
Without going back to the times we missed
We can just live in today
Before tomorrow wakes and takes it all away
